Car care products

What are the problems?
Special cleaning products and polishes for cars are both powerful and effective. This is because they contain strong chemicals that remove dirt and grease efficiently.

Many car care products used to contain chemicals called alkyl phenols. These have been found to disrupt hormonal systems and their use is no longer permitted in these products.

Residues of degreasers and a number of petroleum products persist in the environment, and can harm plants, animals and people in various ways.

What can you do?
Choose eco-labelled washing and polishing products. There are greener alternatives for most car care products you need to maintain your car. A mechanical car-wash (with brushes or rollers) is better for the environment than a touchless car wash, which needs stronger chemicals.

Waste
Any products that you use on your car will in the long run end up in the environment. Think about which products you use, and the quantities you use. If you have small amounts of waste chemicals, think about whether they need to be delivered to hazardous waste collection points.
